“Three Key Words for a Better than Before Mid-Life”

The other day a client said to me, “Coach Andrea, it’s all in the words”. I thought about this and realized this is true in our communication with ourselves and our relationships. In other words; What is our self talk about? How do we communicate to others? How do we respond? Coming from a professional artistic background, it’s a wonderful and passionate experience to be able to express oneself through dance, art, and music. Yet artists as well deal with the self-talk, communicating to others and responding.

On that note, let’s move into the three key words I learned from acting coach Clifford David of the Strasburg Technique.  According to Clifford and others, these are the key words to use as an Actor prepares for the scene, the play, the audition.

Without further ado, here they are!

Concentration, Relaxation and Imagination

Concentration- According to Webster, is focusing the attention on a single object, problem, task. On the other hand, in this ever so fast paced world we are all experts at multi-tasking! So let’s take a moment. Slow down. Focus.

  • What would happen if you and your spouse, friend or mother actually turned off the TV, phone or news and enjoyed each other’s company? In other words, no distractions. Yikes, that might be even scary! One on one. Perhaps you would notice the way your spouse giggles, the depth of their eyes or their animated body language. There could even be an intimate conversation. One that brought you closer together rather than farther apart.
  • What could happen if you had the courage to leave your dissatisfying job and truly concentrate on finding work you love? A career transition at 50? Yes, I have clients doing just that! I recommend a book “How to Find the Work You Love” by Laurence G. Boldt.   
  • What would happen if you kept your word and did what you said you would? And what might that be? Your exercise program, more quiet time, socializing with new people, getting rid of all those old papers, getting support, etc.

I encourage you to practice concentrating on one thing for a certain amount of time. Set this up for yourself. Discipline yourself. Go the extra mile. Prioritize and follow through! Reread those newsletters!

For example:

If you want to play the piano, practice with no interruptions for an hour.

If you want to make a career change, spend 30 minutes researching what is available to you when you get home from your present work.

If you are feeling alone or times are really rough, I encourage you to seek a Spiritual Mind Service in your area or perhaps a motivating speaker, priest or minister. Quiet down, go within, listen to your heart and know the truth will set you free.

Questions to Ask Yourself:

What can I CONCENTRATE on today that will make a difference in my Life? Is there something I can do right now?

How can I give myself the time for RELAXATION?

How can I use the power of IMAGINATION to create my 2nd Half of Life?
